URGENT! Boycott AquaBounty Genetically Engineered Salmon

AquaBounty Technologies, a rather unknown U.S. based company, has created a genetically engineered new species of salmon approved by the FDA for human consumption. AquaBounty is aiming to get their GMO salmon in the U.S. market this fall. We must act now to block this!

Why are AquaBounty genetically engineered salmon problematic?
  • It is the first genetically engineered animal approved for human consumption. This opens the door for more genetically engineered fish and animals. Also the low standards of science used sets an alarming precedent for the government's expectations for genetically engineered animals.

  • Salmon are a keystone species that are essential to indigenous food sovereignty and coastal tribes’ way of life. In addition to harming indigenous food ways, the creation of a corporately owned new salmon species does not respect the sacred relationship salmon peoples have with salmon and threatens the existence of wild salmon altogether.

  • If and when genetically engineered salmon escapes, they will further threaten wild salmon and other wild fish by out-competing them, endangering the ecological balance. We cannot trust AquaBounty nor fish farms they may partner with to safe keep the ecology and make decisions for our future without our consent.

  • AquaBounty’s plan is to confine farmed fish that are treated with pesticides, antibiotics, and synthetic chemicals and are incredibly susceptible to infectious diseases. In the midst of a global pandemic connected to industrial agriculture’s confinement of animals, it is of global concern to be doubling down on the confined animal industry.

  • Farmed salmon are nutritionally deficient, having inferior fat profiles compared to wild salmon and higher concentrations of contaminants. Further, it is unknown what the health impact on humans would be in consuming this genetically engineered animal.

  • While AquaBounty tries to pitch their company as “sustainable” advocates are asking: what is sustainable about avoiding labelling requirements, using the general public as a science experiment, and violating the consent of the first peoples of this land.

  • Despite the widespread opposition to genetically engineered salmon AquaBounty intends to expand globally, increasing corporate control of the global food system. At this moment they are trying to sneak their salmon, currently located at their facility in Albany Indiana, into the local marketplace. We must stop them at their tracks.

AquaBounty’s genetically engineered salmon are NOT a solution to the future of the food system.

How and why to personally boycott?

At this point the government has given AquaBounty the greenlight to sell GMO salmon in the US. However, THE PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER TO BOYCOTT THESE FISH AND SHUT AQUABOUNTY DOWN!

  • A boycott is a powerful action we can participate in as collective individuals to block AquaBounty and genetically engineered salmon from moving forward in our communities. It is also a way to prove that genetically engineered salmon is not viable and investors should pull out and steer clear of it.

  • Make a pledge that before purchasing or consuming salmon from a restaurant, grocery store, or food distributor you will ask if they are selling AquaBounty’s GE fish and will not buy it if that's the case. If they are serving AquaBounty fish you can go further and boycott the establishment until they commit to not carry it. Commit to encouraging this boycott in your community by engaging friends, family, and acquaintances.

  • Boycotting both AquaBounty’s conventional and genetically engineered salmon is important because both are raised in the same facility, risking cross contamination between conventional and GE salmon eggs. AquaBounty is using conventional salmon to establish themselves and create more acceptance for their frankenfish in the marketplace.

What other ways can we push this boycott?

AquaBounty may try to first sell their salmon to restaurants and big food service companies where lack of transparency in sourcing is commonplace.

  • Several major grocery stores, restaurants and food retailers have made commitments to not sell genetically engineered salmon including Walmart, Target, Costco, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and more.

  • Some of the major foodservice companies like Aramark, Sodexo, and Compass Group (Subsidiaries: Chartwells/Bon Appetit Management Co) have yet to make solid commitments to not sell genetically engineered salmon. These companies contract with colleges and universities, schools, stadiums, hospitals, the military, and more. They must commit to never buy, sell, nor serve genetically engineered salmon.

I pledge to boycott AquaBountyTechnologies fish products, both their conventional farmed salmon and their AquAdvantage genetically engineered salmon. I pledge that before purchasing or consuming salmon from a restaurant, grocery store, or food retailer I will ask if they are selling AquaBounty fish and I will boycott if they are. I will encourage this boycott in my community.

Further, I petition that all grocery stores, restaurants and food distributors also commit to boycotting AquaBounty fish products. I specifically demand Aramark, Sodexo & Compass Group (including subsidiaries Chartwells/Bon Appetit) commit to never buy, sell, nor serve any AquaBounty Technologies salmon nor any genetically engineered fish.
