President DeGioia: Stop Union-Busting at Georgetown
President DeGioia
Nearly two months ago, Georgetown University expressed its desire to negotiate an agreement with GAGE for a private election through the American Arbitration Association (AAA). We believed based on this that Georgetown’s president, John DeGioia, had recognized that graduate workers should be able to decide for ourselves whether we want a union.
It is therefore extremely disappointing that DeGioia and his representatives have prolonged negotiations with GAGE in a brazen attempt to thwart our chances of holding a union election this semester. It has already been nearly five months since GAGE members announced that we had achieved majority support and asked DeGioia to recognize us as the union for Georgetown graduate workers. Many graduate workers do not receive a living wage, adequate health insurance, or other essential benefits, even though we create value for Georgetown through our teaching and research. For us, holding a free and fair election as soon as possible is a matter of the utmost importance and urgency.
Add your name above to demand that President DeGioia cease the stalling tactics before he further damages Georgetown’s reputation as a champion of workers’ rights. Georgetown graduate workers deserve far more respect than he has shown us thus far. President DeGioia is failing in his obligation to honor the terms of the university’s own Just Employment Policy, a moral commitment which promises to facilitate union elections “without undue delay or hindrance.”

We demand that you live up to Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit values and commitment to social justice and just employment by coming to an agreement with the Georgetown Alliance of Graduate Employees (GAGE) for a union election without further delay.
