Public Debate and Vote on Proposed Hydrogen Trials in Redcar

We are asking you to sign a petition supporting a public debate and vote about the Redcar hydrogen trial scheme. Just like the only other area going through this process got from their town council!

Residents and landlords of 2,000 homes and businesses in Redcar have been chosen as one of two proposed "hydrogen villages".

If the scheme goes ahead everybody in the trial area will have their gas supply turned off. If necessary Northern Gas will enter homes and businesses by force to do this.

Cadent Gas in Whitby, Ellesmere Port is offering an entirely different deal where residents can opt into taking hydrogen or can stay with their current boiler and other gas appliances.

Safety

Virtually every single independent gas or process safety expert with experience working with hydrogen says it is too dangerous to use in your home or in commercial premises.

The Health and Safety Executive has this to say about hydrogen:

"Hydrogen gas has a very low viscosity and so it is very difficult to prevent hydrogen systems from developing leaks"

"The energy necessary to initiate a hydrogen/air explosion is very small.....less than one tenth that of other fuels such as methane"

"Even very small sparks, such as those produced by wearing certain types of clothing are capable of igniting hydrogen / air mixtures and causing an explosion."

Dr Jan Rosenow has carried out an analysis of all 37 scientific independent studies looking at the best way to clean up our heating. Not a single study sees anything more than a tiny role for hydrogen.

Redcar residents need not worry about the cost of hydrogen as long as the government and Northern Gas stand by their word. But without subsidy the cost would be more than twice the price of normal gas heating.

How many more people would be left in fuel poverty if hydrogen were ever rolled out widely?

Conclusion

What is the point of this trial? It increases the risk of you, your family, your tenants or your business suffering an explosion.

It is a bad environmental choice.

You, the local residents, deserve the same debate and vote that Whitby, Ellesmere Port is getting.

I agree that there should be a public debate about the proposed hydrogen trials in the Redcar area.

Including independent experts, Northern Gas Network representatives, local councillors & members of the public affected by the trials.

The same type of public debate and vote that is taking place in Whitby, Ellesmere Port.
