Release Keith Davis, Jr

Marilyn Mosby, State's Attorney for Baltimore; Lazette Ringgold-Kirksey, Prosecutor

Black LIVES Matter. Don't wait for another tragic hashtag before you will take action! Keith Davis, Jr. survived Baltimore City police officers shooting more than 40 bullets at him after they mistook him for an armed robber on June 7th, 2015.  Keith survived multiple gunshot wounds - including one in his neck. Keith survived more than 8 months of imprisonment without possibility of bail while he waited for his "fair and speedy trial" and was denied proper medical care.   When Keith made it to his day in court in February, and a jury found him not guilty of the 15 charges filed in June, the Baltimore State's Attorney's Office threw another round of unfounded charges at him.   We all need to fight for Keith's freedom now.  Tell the people who are charged with administering justice to call off the attack.  In addition to signing this petition, and making phone calls to Marilyn Mosby's office at 443-984-6000, please consider donating at https://fundrazr.com/campaigns/b16kK3/ab/a5XxX7 so Keith and his family can pay for his defense against these unjust attacks.  Every dollar helps.

Every charge needs to be dropped.  Let Keith be reunited with his family. Give him a fighting chance to heal.

RELEASE KEITH DAVIS, JR. TODAY.

Marilyn Mosby, back in May - almost exactly one month before Keith Davis, Jr. was almost killed by Baltimore City Police Officers, you made a historic speech and alluded to your "tremendous responsibility". Take some responsibility and drop all the charges against Keith now.

You uphold two radically different criminal justice systems for police officers and black people who aren't in uniform.

Back in June 2015, police officers shot into an auto repair garage and almost hit a black woman trying to leave. Keith couldn't leave without going through the officers and they shot more than 40 bullets at him. We all know that Keith's only real crime that day in June is that he survived. You and the police officers have been doing everything in your power to punish him for surviving and potentially drawing attention to the fact that police almost killed the wrong guy.

Police knew that the victim of an armed robbery that day in June described a person who looked totally different from Keith in every way possible - except for being a black man. So when Keith defied the odds and survived, he was moved from the hospital to detention, and charges were brought against him based on the shooting officers' allegations. One of those original charges in June was discharging a weapon, because the officers alleged that Keith fired at them. That charge of course had to be dropped later when evidence showed that the gun Keith was alleged to have used was not fired.

Keith was imprisoned for almost 8 months when the only basis for the charges against him was the shooting police officers' allegations. Marilyn Mosby, you are responsible for choosing to keep pursuing Keith (even when community members repeatedly reached out to you to look carefully at the facts). You are responsible for keeping a seriously injured man in prison all those months while there was no evidence supporting the charges.

Meanwhile, the officers (whose allegations were the only real basis for the charges against Keith) were NOT EVEN ASKED ONE QUESTION about discharging their weapons at Keith UNTIL JANUARY. Formal statements were not taken until more than half a year after Keith was imprisoned. Officer Eskins testified during Keith's trial that he was not asked a single question about what happened on June 7th until January. Officer Eskins also testified that he received a letter from the State's Attorney's Office in November (having not been asked a single question) informing him that no charges would be filed against him.

So, no charges against officers who fired more than 40 bullets without a single question asked of the officers. And, a slew of charges and months of imprisonment for a black man without evidence - even without formal statements from the officers.

When the jury was finally given an opportunity to consider the case in February (after your office's multiple postponements) and recognized that the officers' testimonies were not credible and that Keith was not guilty of any of the charges you filed in June, you conjured up a new batch of charges.

When you realized that the officers' allegations that Keith shot at them on June 7th could not have been true because the gun in question was not fired, it didn't stop you from pursuing Keith with the rest of the charges resting on the same stories from those officers.

And now, knowing police officers eventually testified to the fact that the gun in question was not fired, you are pursuing a host of new charges against Keith. And you haven't been deterred yet by the fact that it is literally impossible for Keith to have committed those crimes with a gun that was not fired.

People in Baltimore and well beyond see what is happening. We demand that you stop subjecting Keith Davis Jr to cruel and unusual punishment for crimes he clearly did not commit. Release Keith today.
