Tell Trump and DHS: Renew Temporary Protected Status for Survivors of National Crises

President Donald Trump and Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke

As hurricanes, floods, and wildfires have destroyed homes, businesses, and lives in the United States in recent weeks, the Trump Administration is threatening to end a form of humanitarian relief for survivors of natural disasters and war.

Since George H. W. Bush started it in 1990, Temporary Protected Status has enabled people like Belinda Osorio fleeing violent conflict or natural disasters in selected countries to avoid returning to life-threatening conditions. In the spirit of compassion, administrations of both parties consistently have renewed these temporary protections.

However, the Trump Administration has declared it will end TPS. If that happens, more than 320,000 people are under threat to be deported to devastated countries.

The Department of Homeland Security says it will announce whether it will extend TPS for most people at risk on November 6. UNITE HERE is launching this petition as part of a broad national campaign to save TPS, with lobbying efforts in D.C. and actions all across the country.

Take action today by sending this message to Trump and the acting head of DHS, Elaine Duke. You can make a difference—if you act now.

Temporary Protected Status provides essential protections for families who cannot return safely to their home countries because of natural disasters or war.

Revoking TPS will force 320,000 people back to countries that have not yet recovered from the natural disasters and other crises that first made them eligible for temporary protection.

TPS is a program of humanitarian relief. Do not revoke it. Renew all existing TPS designations and ensure that the United States continues to protect families fleeing extraordinary disaster and violence.
