Stop the rent hikes! Rent Stabilization for all!

Governor Kathy Hochul

Every New Yorker needs a safe, stable, and affordable home. And for over 50 years, rent stabilization has helped working class and low income renters in New York State organize for better living conditions, affordability, and control over where they live. That’s why tenants across New York State are organizing to bring rent stabilization to their communities: in Kingston, Pougkeepisie, Albany, Rochester, and beyond.

But rent stabilization is in desperate need of reform. Too many tenants are excluded from the system – whether because their building is “too new” or “too small.” We’ve lost hundreds of thousands of apartments to the free market – once affordable homes where landlords are now free to speculate at will. And every year, New York tenants are subject to rent increases based solely on the will of the New York City Mayor.

Each year, the mayor-appointed Rent Guidelines Board votes on how much to adjust rents for a million tenants in New York City. It’s supposed to work for the people. But under Mayor Adams, the RGB serves to line the pocket-books of the real estate industry. This process is a sham, and tenants deserve more!

Join us to demand oversight and tenant control over Rent Guidelines Board appointments, and a rent stabilization system for everyone.

All New Yorkers deserve a safe, stable, and affordable home. And for over 50 years, rent stabilization has provided just that! Rent stabilization has helped keep families like mine in our neighborhood. By limiting annual rent increases and giving me the right to stay in my home, rent stabilization helps me afford healthcare, groceries, and other necessities. It is good for whole communities, who thrive when our neighbors have the right to stay.

But rent stabilization is under attack. This year, Mayor Adams’s hand-picked Rent Guidelines Board hiked rents on tenants for the third consecutive year – despite rampant evidence that real estate income has risen and working class families are struggling to make ends meet.

We need to reform a system that gives Mayor Adams unilateral control over our homes! Please join me in making sure that rent guidelines boards work for the people – not big landlords.

Sincerely,
