Repair and Reopen the Griffith Park Public Pool!
Los Feliz Neighborhood Council, Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, Atwater Neighborhood Council, Los Angeles City Council, and Mayor Karen Bass
The Griffith Park Public Pool has been closed indefinitely since 2022 because of cracks in the pool's foundation. Working class families of Los Feliz, Atwater, Silver Lake, and East Hollywood have been without access to a public pool for over 4 years due to pandemic closures prior to the declaration of disrepair. Los Angeles residents and visitors should have convenient public resources like parks, shade-trees, pools, libraries, and public restrooms in order to support healthy families in all neighborhoods.
The historic Griffith Park Public Pool was built in 1927 and is one of the largest pools within the city. The Municipal Plunge is a gem of the neighborhood at the intersection of Los Feliz Blvd and Riverside Drive. It is imperative that our bustling city has a plan to support working people in the face of climate change and the increased cost of living in LA. With increasing temperatures each year, our community needs healthy spaces to cool down and learn water safety skills.
How can our city spend public funds on preparing for the future Olympic games when one of our finest public spaces of recreation and athletics sits vacant and in disrepair?
- Seek out sponsors to expedite the project.
Invest in other cooling alternatives for the park during summer months while construction is underway: misters, splash pads, temporary pool, sprinklers, etc.
Provide shuttles to open pools.
In order to restore the Griffith Park Municipal Plunge to its former glory and ensure increased accessibility, it will take millions of dollars of investment from our city and/or state. Los Angeles needs to be a healthy and safe place to live, work, and recreate- regardless of income.
