RESPECT IS A UNION VALUE

NEA Leadership

Advance Justice with Us

Some National Education Association leaders are making decisions that prevent NEA union staff from getting the respect they deserve.

We need to challenge anti-blackness, so NEA staff can focus on serving our nation’s educators and students instead of fearing retaliation and marginalization.

NEA’s current climate has deeply impacted our staff’s ability to do their work serving our nation’s educators and students. Our staff deserves respect, and our three million members deserve the best our expert staff can offer. The time for conversations behind closed doors has come and gone.

Why We’re Speaking Out:

At NEA Headquarters there is a persisting culture of mistreatment and disrespect of our Black staff that has continued to go unchallenged. After many conversations with both HR and senior leaders, as well as multiple grievances filed surrounding the mistreatment of NEASO staff—the promises that resulted from all these steps taken have yet to be fulfilled.

NEASO staff are expected to go through NEA Human Resources to remedy their concerns—but when HR fails to prioritize serious issues only the Executive Director can hold them accountable. We’re calling on Executive Director Kim Anderson to uphold the values we know she holds dearly and usher in change to create a more just and equitable NEA.

No one is protected if we're all not protected—so the NEA Staff Union is joining in solidarity with our colleagues and calling on our leaders to work with us to prevent any future incidents that marginalize and harm our staff.

We join in solidarity with Black NEA staff who are facing prejudice and racism from some of the leaders they tirelessly support. No one is protected if we're all not protected.

We're asking for a clear, public expression from NEA governance of the harm caused and the impact it has upon the staff it was perpetrated against—and what steps will be taken to ensure the harm is not repeated.

We're demanding that the checks and balances between staff and NEA leaders surrounding bargaining unit work be re-established.

We believe that respect is a union value and that leaders will take the right actions to create a more equitable and just NEA.
