Respect Justice Ginsburg’s Legacy: No Rushed Senate Confirmation

U.S. Senate

We’re shocked and heartbroken by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a true champion for our democracy and the rule of law.

But sadly, we must be ready to take action even in our grief -- because just hours after Justice Ginsburg’s passing, Mitch McConnell confirmed that he will rush to hold a vote on a Supreme Court nomination by President Trump.

As widely reported, just days before her death, Justice Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.”

President Trump and Senate Majority Leader McConnell should honor her wish.

It's disgusting -- but sadly, not surprising-- that Mitch McConnell wants the Senate to abdicate its constitutional duty to thoroughly vet any nominee to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat before the election.

And while McConnell may be willing to do a total about-face from his position in 2016 (when he blocked Merrick Garland’s nomination) -- there’s no guarantee that he can get 49 other senators to go along with his scheme, with the nation’s eyes focused on them in the coming days.

We’re demanding that senators use all means at their disposal to do their constitutional duty, and ensure a thorough, careful, & transparent vetting process.

With the Senate adjourning in two weeks, our elected officials still must pass a continuing resolution to fund the government -- as well as a coronavirus relief package that will properly fund local governments, election security, and the Postal Service.

There is simply not enough time for the Senate to hold a full, rigorous, vetting process on top of those urgent needs. And a rushed confirmation at their expense would only undermine the Senate and the Supreme Court’s legitimacy in the eyes of the American people.

We must respect Justice Ginsburg’s monumental legacy -- and a key part of that is honoring her wishes by stopping a rushed, politicized Supreme Court confirmation. If you agree, please add your name today >>

The American people deserve a careful and transparent vetting process for the next Supreme Court justice. A rushed confirmation before the election or during the lame-duck Senate session will only undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

The Senate must not rush through a confirmation this year -- and should only fill Justice Ginsburg’s Supreme Court seat after a thorough, complete, and rigorous process.
