Revoke the Federal Holiday Status of "Columbus Day"

All members of Congress

Together we must bravely address America’s difficult past, eliminating the narratives that maintain white supremacy, and create new narratives for a more just and equitable future for all people and the planet.

Columbus Day as a national holiday maintains the flawed and abusive narrative of Christopher Columbus as the "brave explorer" who "discovered America."   This narrative has laid a foundation of white supremacy in America, completely disregarding the hundreds of millions of Indigenous inhabitants that existed before Columbus stumbled upon Indigenous lands.

We ask that Congress revoke the federal holiday status of Columbus Day. We further ask that Congress create a federal holiday known as Indigenous Peoples' Day, correcting centuries of white-washed narratives so that all Americans are given the opportunity to become more informed and engaged citizens.
