Roll Back the Asylum Ban – Protect the Right to Asylum!

President Biden

On February 21, 2023, the Biden Administration proposed a new rule that will establish a near-total ban on access to asylum at the U.S. southern border. The rule denies access to asylum for those who can’t prove they applied for and were denied access to asylum in other countries through which they transited, unless they have made an appointment at a port of entry using the CBP One app, a notoriously glitchy app. This outsources asylum to other countries which have barely functioning asylum systems and where people fleeing violence face more dangers. This rule and other changes to the asylum system will have a discriminatory impact, favoring those with access to technology and wealthier and white immigrants who can access visas and travel by plane. While announced as a two-year, temporary measure, this rule may cause the long-term erosion of the right to access asylum as we know it in the United States.

The rule will be open for public comment for 30 days. After that, this ban on asylum at the southern border becomes a stark reality for people fleeing for their lives.

Dear President Biden,

We ask you to fulfill your promises to restore access to asylum in the United States for people fleeing for their lives. The new asylum ban rule will turn back asylum-seekers to deadly danger and will harshly affect poor, non-white populations and those in most need of protection. This is not who we are as a nation. We ask you to roll back this rule and focus on ensuring full access to asylum and addressing the root causes of why so many people are forced to flee their homes.
