Save Our Schools!

City of Newberry Mayor Jordan Marlowe and the Commissioners

The proposal to convert Newberry Elementary School, Oak View Middle School, and Newberry High School from traditional public schools to non-traditional charter schools threatens to fracture our shared Archer-Newberry community, deprive our rural communities of education resources, and weaken our public education system.

By signing this petition, you are joining us in voicing your opposition to the conversion of these public schools into charter schools. Together, we can uphold the values of equality, transparency, and accountability in education and ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a high-quality education in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Your signature is not just a signature; it is a declaration of your commitment to safeguarding the future of public education in our community. We urge you to stand with us in this crucial fight and make your voice heard.

We, the Archer-Newberry community, oppose the proposal to convert Newberry Elementary School, Oak View Middle School, and Newberry High School from traditional public schools to non-traditional charter schools. We urge the Newberry First Education Initiative to pull this application for conversion and instead engage the community in a discussion on the future of our shared public schools.

If they refuse to adequately consult with the community before they take over our community public schools and hand them over to the Newberry City Commission, we call on all parents and teachers in NES, OVMS, & NHS to REJECT this ill-conceived proposal and VOTE NO when the time comes.

Our public schools serve as the bedrock of our two communities, and the rural areas outside of Newberry city limits, providing a quality education to all students, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. By converting these schools into charter schools, we risk exacerbating existing inequalities and segregating our education system.

This conversion to non-traditional charter schools threatens the strength, integrity, and accessibility of our schools. Charter schools often operate with less transparency and accountability than traditional public schools, leading to concerns about the allocation of resources, curriculum standards, and admissions policies.

We believe in the power of public education to uplift and empower every citizen. Instead of diverting resources and students away from public schools, we should be investing in their improvement and expansion. Every child deserves access to a high-quality education in a supportive and inclusive environment, and converting public schools into charter schools undermines this fundamental principle.

Therefore, we urge the Newberry City Commission and all parents and teachers to prioritize preserving and strengthening of our public education system by rejecting the conversion of these public schools into charter schools. Let us work together to ensure that ALL students have the opportunity to thrive and succeed in their education.
