Save the number 2 bus in Sileby

Ann Carruthers, Director of Environment and Transport, Leicestershire County Council

We are petitioning Leicestershire County Council to find and support a new provider for the number 2 bus.

What are the issues here?

1. No public transport between Cossington and Leicester, and the only link between Sileby and Leicester will be the train. The train station at Sileby is completely inaccessible to anyone with mobility issues including the elderly and anyone with a pushchair.

2. No Sunday public transport from Sileby at all. The train does not run on Sundays. his lack of public transport leaves many people in a crisis as they are unable to get to work, to hospital appointments, to visit relatives and to live their lives

3. Additional burden on local people with added fuel or taxi costs. The huge cost of fuel for those who do have cars adds an additional layer of hardship.

4. Several large new housing developments are either planned or underway for this area and yet the level of public transport is being significantly reduced. How is this compatible with Charnwood's net zero plans?

Please sign this petition if you live in Charnwood and are affected by the withdrawal of the bus service.

Dear Ann,
We are asking that Leicestershire County Council identify a new provider for the bus route between Sileby and Leicester and that the route is adequately supported to allow it to flourish.

With the withdrawal of the number 2 bus service there will now be no public transport between Cossington and Leicester, and the only link between Sileby and Leicester will be the train.

The train station at Sileby is completely inaccessible to anyone with mobility issues including the elderly and anyone with a pushchair. There is also no Sunday service.

This lack of public transport leaves many people in a crisis as they are unable to get to work, to hospital appointments, to visit relatives and to live their lives. The huge cost of fuel for those who do have cars adds an additional layer of hardship. Several large new housing developments are either planned or underway for this area and yet the level of public transport is being significantly reduced. How is this compatible with Charnwood's net zero plans?

The bus services in Sileby have been increasingly unreliable, which leads to less people using the bus for fear they will be late or unable to get where they are going. Providing a stable, reliable service is the best way to increase public transport use.
There are many people who live their lives between Sileby and Leicester, be it because they commute between them, because they have to access specialist services only available in Leicestershire or because they have caring responsibilities that require them to travel.

It is essential that Sileby is not cut off from Leicester.

Thank you
