Say No to a News Monopoly

The Department of Justice

The people of Chicago are in danger of losing the Chicago Sun-Times, one of the city’s two major daily newspapers, through a sale to the parent company of its only real competitor, the Chicago Tribune. This sale will also directly impact the award winning writers at The Reader. Most importantly, it will create a virtual news monopoly in one of the nation’s biggest cities. Please sign the petition and say #NoNewsMonopoly!

The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Reader belong to the people of Chicago. We urge the U.S. Department of Justice to closely scrutinize any proposal to sell Wrapports LLC to Tronc, or any other bidder, and provide adequate time for bids to be prepared. We also urge the department to ensure that any deal will preserve journalistic independence for the Reader and the Sun-Times and position these vitally important community institutions for long-term survival. Each publication serves unique audiences within the city's diverse communities, and sustaining multiple, independent voices in Chicago journalism should be a greater priority than maximizing returns for investors in Tronc, Wrapports or any other potential owner.
