Say No to Saudi Arabia Leading the WTO

World Trade Organization representatives

Urge WTO members to reject Saudi Arabia’s nominee to lead the World Trade Organization.

The Saudi dictatorship has submitted a nominee for the top position of the World Trade Organization -- the Director General.

Saudi Arabia’s monarchy is unfit to lead the WTO. In addition to its brutal repression, the government systemically discriminates against women and maintains the “Kafala” labor system, a form of modern-day slavery.

The Saudi nominee to lead the WTO is Mohammad Maziad al-Tuwaijri, the government’s former Minister of Economy and Planning. He is complicit in the Saudi government’s human rights violations, and he has remained silent on his government’s brutal record of repression.

Saudi Arabia’s monarchy has nominated al-Tuwaijiri to distract world leaders from the human rights abuses that the dictatorship carries out on a daily basis. That’s why we came together with 18 human rights and peace organizations to write a letter to members of the World Trade Organization demanding that the Saudi nomination be rejected.

We demand that WTO members reject the Saudi Arabian monarchy’s nominee for Director General of the World Trade Organization, Mohammed Maziad al-Tuwaijri.

Saudi Arabia’s monarchy is unfit to lead the WTO. In addition to its brutal repression, the government systemically discriminates against women and maintains the “Kafala” labor system, a form of modern-day slavery.

Minister al-Tuwaijiri has been complicit in Saudi Arabia’s repression. His public silence in the face of grave human rights violations is abhorrent and disqualifies him from being considered for this position.
