SBS pay needs to be fair, equal and transparent
SBS Management
After years of MEAA members pushing SBS management to fix its unfair pay structure, management have proposed a new classifications system for all staff covered by the Enterprise Agreement.
While the proposal does include some improvements, like removing the outdated difference between "Broadcasters" and "Journalists" we're concerned that management's proposal will not lead to fairness and equality in our workplace.
Reducing the 8 pay grades in our current EBA to 5 makes it hard for us know what we should be paid. It means that two people doing the same job could be technically classified as on the same pay level, but have a difference in pay of up to $20,000 per year.
The definitions that accompany SBS management's proposed levels are also too broad, giving management too much discretion and limiting our ability as workers to argue for an increase to a higher pay level. We want specific definitions that outline the skills and experience required of each pay level, and examples of roles that would sit on these levels, so it's clear which pay level we should be on and what it will take to progress.
The limited number of bands and vague definitions limits pay transparency in our workplace, which will make it harder for you to get pay progression and worsen the gender and racial pay gaps at SBS.
Sign the petition to tell management that we want a structure that is transparent, easy to understand and make our workplace fairer and more equal, not less.

We the undersigned staff at SBS want a workplace where all staff have fair and equal opportunities.
Transparency and security are essential to ensure our workplace has no gender or racial pay gaps, and all staff understand what they should be paid for their work.
While we think there are some improvements in SBS's proposed classifications structure, we are concerned that it will allow more inequality, not less.
We are calling for:
1. More levels, not less.
2. More specific definitions in each level that make it clear which roles should be on which level
3. A mechanism that allows a pathway for pay progression, like other media workplaces have.
