Send a message to Jewish progressive politicians: Don’t Fund Annexation

Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Brian Schatz, Rep. Andy Levin, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Alan Lowenthal, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. John Yarmuth, Rep. Jerry Nadler, Rep. Steve Cohen

In just a few days, on July 1st, the Israeli government will move ahead with its plan to formally annex parts of the West Bank, going against international law and a violation of Palestinian human rights.

The American government should not foot the bill for annexation or for Israel’s ongoing human rights violations. As American Jews, we cannot sit by and let our tax dollars go toward violent policies in the name of our safety.

Jewish progressive politicians have a special responsibility to lead the fight against annexation right now, and they need to hear our voices.

We have the tools to act against annexation and the daily violence of Israel’s military occupation — our politicians just refuse to use them. Every year, we give over $3 billion to the Israeli military. Our country has leveraged that money many times before to influence Israeli policy, just like we have done it with Egypt, Pakistan, and — just this month! — to Cameroon.

Each and every one of us needs to demand more from the Jewish politicians who have the choice to lead in this moment. It is time to develop and support legislation to ensure that U.S. military funding is used towards preventing annexation and achieving freedom and dignity for all Palestinians and Israelis — and does not fund any activities of annexation, such as home demolitions or building additional Jewish settlements on private Palestinian land.

Send a message to Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Brian Schatz, Rep. Andy Levin, Rep. Jamie Raskin, Rep. Alan Lowenthal, Rep. Jan Schakowsky, Rep. John Yarmuth, Rep. Jerry Nadler, Rep. Steve Cohen — the Jewish progressive politicians who can lead right now.

I am calling on you to help develop and support legislation to ensures that U.S. funding is used to move towards preventing annexation and achieving freedom and dignity for all Palestinians and Israelis — and does not fund any activities of annexation, such as home demolitions or building additional Jewish settlements in the Occupied Territories.

As we’ve seen in the past, words alone will not stop Israel’s current government from moving forward with decisions that violate Palestinian human rights and international law. Our government currently gives 3.8 billion dollars annually in military aid to the Israeli government. We need to use this assistance as a tool to pressure the Israeli government to abide by international law and respect the human rights of everyone.
