Save the Shoal Creek bike & pedestrian path between Lamar & 34th St!
Council Members Zo Qadri & Alison Alter, Austin City Council, Austin Transportation and Public Works Department
The City of Austin plans to REMOVE the bike/pedestrian path on Shoal Creek Blvd between Lamar & 34th St, despite strong public support* - and the City's own plans - for protected facilities.
We must protect this critical link of the nine-mile Shoal Creek Trail from Lady Bird Lake to Hwy 183.
Sign our petition NOW opposing this big step backwards and call for a continuous protected bike and pedestrian path on Shoal Creek between Lamar and 34th St.
- For the street’s eastern span (Lamar Blvd to Shoal Creek trailhead), 376 respondents supported an on-street bike-ped protected path, versus 190 who supported no protection for bicycles.
- For the western span (Shoal Creek trailhead to 34th St), 509 respondents supported either a protected bike-ped path or an off-street park trail, versus 85 who supported no protection.

Please work with Austin Transportation and Public Works (TPW) to ensure the protected bike & pedestrian path on Shoal Creek Boulevard between Lamar and 34th St is NOT removed. This is a critical part of the nine mile Shoal Creek Trail between Lady Bird Lake and Highway 183. Furthermore, this runs past a school where students and families most need access to safe walking and bicycling.
There is both public support and City plans in favor of continuous protected facilities on this street. According to TPW's own survey, for the street’s eastern span (Lamar Blvd to Shoal Creek trailhead), 376 respondents supported an on-street bike-ped protected path, versus 190 who supported no protection for bicycles. For the western span (Shoal Creek trailhead to 34th St), 509 respondents supported either a protected bike-ped path or an off-street park trail, versus 85 who supported no protection. In addition, the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan (ASMP) calls for all ages and abilities bicycle facilities and complete sidewalks along this stretch. TPW should follow through on this direction.
Instead, there should be a wide protected bicycle-pedestrian path on Shoal Creek Blvd from Lamar to the Shoal Creek trailhead. There should also be the same on-street facility between the trailhead to 34th St for at least until an improved bike-ped trail is installed in the adjacent park.
