Sign Alabama SB 172

Governor Robert Bentley

Last year Alabama closed 31 drivers license bureaus in counties with the highest percentage of non-white voters. Every county with over 75% of registered voters that are African-American had their DMV office closed. Alabama requires voters to have photo ID to vote, so this disenfranchised the voters in those counties. However, public pressure forced the Governor to re-open the offices 1 day a month last fall.

The legislature just passed a bill to require the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency to operate a driver's license office in each county a minimum of two days each week. But the Governor hasn't said whether he will sign it into law. Bills passed in the last days of a session must be signed by the governor within 10 days of session adjournment or they’re vetoed, which means it will expire this weekend.
