Congress

Health coverage and care are critical for every family. But immigrants face barriers to getting health care because of policy decisions that have left them behind.

Under current law, many immigrants are forced to wait five years before they can enroll in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Undocumented immigrants are barred completely from these programs and from buying affordable insurance from the online Marketplace.

As a result of these restrictions, noncitizens in this country are significantly more likely than citizens to be uninsured. Without insurance, immigrants are forced to navigate a patchwork of care, relying on community health centers or paying directly out of pocket when possible. The spread of the coronavirus has shone a harsh light on the inequities of our health system and made it clearer than ever that every person should be able to get affordable health care, especially now.

Fortunately, there is a path forward. Members of the House, and now the Senate, have introduced the Health Equity and Access Under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Women and Families Act. If passed, the HEAL for Immigrant Women and Families Act would remove barriers to accessing crucial and comprehensive health care that is central to our lives, families, and communities. Now that Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has introduced the HEAL for Immigrant Women and Families Act to the Senate, we need members of Congress to follow his lead and support this historic legislation.

Health coverage and care are critical for every family. But immigrants face barriers to getting health care because of policy decisions that have left them behind. And the spread of the coronavirus has shone a harsh light on the inequities of our health system. However, there is a path forward: the Health Equity and Access Under the Law (HEAL) for Immigrant Women and Families Act. If passed, the HEAL for Immigrant Women and Families Act would expand access to health care for immigrant families. All families should have access to safe and affordable health care now more than ever. As your constituent, I urge you to support this important piece of legislation.
