Marijuana is less harmful than alcohol or cigarettes, both of which are legal for adults.

But marijuana is not legal in most states. According to the Drug Policy Alliance, its criminalization harms young people and people of color, sponsors massive levels of violence, and fails to curb youth access.

Marijuana has been legalized in a few states and the District of Columbia, and in places like Colorado and Washington it has led to improved police relations, decreased crime and more revenue for these states.
