The DC Council

This spring, 10 out of 13 D.C. council members introduced or co-sponsored the D.C. Fair Elections bill to amplify the voices of everyday residents in District elections.

Now, it’s time for them to vote!

If passed, D.C. Fair Elections will shift power back to DC voters, especially people of color and working families, and free candidates to run for office without having to rely on big donors who don’t represent the District.

Sign the petition to the entire DC Council in support of making every voice in the district heard. We want the DC Fair Elections bill passed this year!

Your signature and comment on why you support this legislation will be delivered to the council next week by the DC Fair Elections Coalition so please take a moment to express how this legislation will impact you and your community.

As a member of Daily Kos, I want to thank Council members David Grosso, Charles Allen, Robert White, Kenyan McDuffie, Trayon White, Sr., Elissa Silverman, Brianne Nadeau, Mary Cheh, Phil Mendelson and Anita Bonds for supporting D.C. Fair Elections!

If passed, this program would help make our democracy more inclusive by shifting power back to DC voters, especially people of color and working families, and free candidates to run for office without having to rely on big donors who don’t represent the District. It would do this by making limited public matching funds available to candidates who seek small donations and reject campaign contributions from big donors.

The bill was introduced this spring - now it’s time for a vote!

The consensus within the District is overwhelming. A City Paper poll found that 80% of D.C. residents support public financing of District elections and over 70 organizations — from DC for Democracy, DC Sierra Club and DC Working Families, Fair Budget Coalition, ONE DC,
and beyond — support the fair elections bill we are writing about. Fair Elections has been a great success in places like Montgomery County and New York City.

I am calling on you to champion local democracy by bringing the D.C. Fair Elections bill to a vote immediately.
