Sign Now: Demand Congress strengthen the Office of Congressional Ethics

All Members of Congress

The #MeToo movement has broken through a culture of sexual misconduct in the U.S., but in Congress there remains a group who would rather hide ethical violations and conflicts of interest, than hold individuals accountable.

As allegations of sexual harassment, discrimination and self-dealing roil Capitol Hill, it’s clear that the congressional ethics oversight process is failing to uphold the high moral standards we expect from our elected officials.

Sign the petition today calling on Congress to make the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) permanent and not subject to the whims of Congress. Provide OCE with subpoena power and require an equal body in both the House and Senate so that it can effectively rule on misconduct.

At the beginning of the 115th Congress, House Republican leadership tried to covertly gut OCE—and ethics enforcement—in the House of Representatives.

This sends a clear message to the American people: Within the House and Senate there remains a group who would rather hide ethical violations and conflicts of interest, rather than hold individuals accountable.

Congress has demonstrated that rather than take the difficult step of passing judgment on a fellow lawmaker, congressional committees wait for a member of Congress to resign, lose re-election or leave office voluntarily. In the House, this happened in at least 15 cases since 2009! We demand that Congress strengthen the Office of Congressional Ethics by making the office permanent, providing it with subpoena power and establishing an equal body in both the House and Senate.
