COVID-19 is one of the worst outbreaks in recent memory, damaging Black communities globally and claiming the lives of tens of thousands of community members worldwide.
As Congress is preparing the next COVID-19 stimulus package, the Trump administration and Congressional leadership must provide support to Black immigrants and asylum seekers in the U.S.
The lives of Black immigrants and asylum seekers continue to deteriorate under the Administration’s racist, xenophobic immigration policies. As America’s carceral system has rapidly grown over the last 50 years, so has the detention of immigrants. Just like with mass incarceration, Black immigrants are disproportionately represented in immigration prisons due to anti-Black and anti-immigrant profiling and surveillance. The Trump administration, building on previous presidents’ anti-immigrant policies, has further harmed Black immigrant communities by banning Muslims and Africans, effectively ending asylum, banning refugees, and increasing funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection. Furthermore, Black LGBTQ migrants are oftentimes detained for longer periods, placed in facilities that are not in alignment with their gender identity, and have fewer legal resources and community support.
The COVID-19 global pandemic has shed light on our government’s misdeeds to Black immigrant communities. As Congress drafts legislation to provide support and relief to communities facing the coronavirus, Black immigrants should not be excluded.

Congress must do right by Black immigrant communities by ensuring the next stimulus bill
- provides direct cash assistance to all people in the U.S., regardless of immigration status;
- requires immigration courts to dismiss all removal proceedings and release all immigrants in detention;
- requires USCIS to expedite all applications that are pending to ensure the continuation of immigration status; and
- repeals the Trump Administration’s Public Charge rule so that immigrant community members can seek healthcare amidst the pandemic without fear.
