Republicans are on a rampage about "critical race theory," hell-bent on denying abortion rights, and passing laws that scapegoat transgender kids. It's a deeply cynical and hateful move to score political points on the backs of marginalized people.

But what do some Democrats think is the best response? Ignore these attacks, and try to focus on the economy. This would effectively allow that garbage to go unchallenged.

Not all Democrats see things that way. On April 19, Michigan state senator Mallory McMorrow responded to Republican attacks in a powerful speech. She was unrepentant, passionate and made clear that we will not let hate distract or divide us. We cannot let hate win.

These Republican attacks are working, and we could lose everything we are fighting for. The solution is not to ignore or co-opt this hate, but to instead challenge it head on. We must say what we are for, and make clear why the opposition spreads lies and sows division.
