Last month, St. Louis residents protested in the streets after another white police officer was acquitted in the murder of a black man. Police armed with military-grade weapons abused protesters, while officers repeated the chant used by white supremacists in Charlottesville: "Whose streets? Our streets!"

A militarized police force beat and trampled people exercising their First Amendment rights. When peace officers are armed like a militia, they treat the people they are charged to protect and serve like enemy combatants.

And now Donald Trump wants to put even more military-grade weaponry in the hands of local police.

Militarized police forces are a danger and threat to communities of color.

Police stood by as torch-wielding white supremacists marched on Charlottesville and attacked counter-protesters. Yet police violently attacked dissenters in St. Louis, Ferguson, Baton Rouge, Standing Rock, and anywhere else people of color demonstrate against injustice.

Trump's Justice Department also plans to amp up the so-called War on Drugs, which has been thoroughly debunked as a lie created to justify targeting, over-policing, and suppressing Black people. He wants to build an artillery to declare fake war on people of color.

Donald Trump must not further terrorize communities of color. We must not allow police departments to engage our communities as enemy combatants. We need Congress to end the militarization of local police.

Militarized police are a threat to communities, particularly communities of color. Police with military weapons often escalate confrontations and treat people like enemy combatants in a war.

Please pass the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act and end the militarization of local police.
