Sign the Petition: End this hateful assault on transgender students

Tennessee State House of Representatives

Republicans determined to legalize bigotry have set their sights on transgender students again—this time in Tennessee.

Last week, Tennessee Republicans introduced an invasive bill that would force transgender students to use restrooms corresponding with sex on their birth certificates—rather than the gender they live as every day.

Dangerous legislation like this reinforces the hateful narrative that transgender kids are pretending to be something they’re not. And it fuels the disturbingly high rates of violence perpetrated on transgender people.

Eleven states have introduced anti-transgender bathroom bills in 2016, and the Republican National Committee is encouraging even more.

The Department of Justice affirmed last year that Title IX guarantees protections for transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity. Republicans have made it such a party priority to ostracize transgender children, that they are coordinating efforts to defy federal law.

These Republican bathroom bills claim to protect student privacy, while obliterating the privacy of trans students--both the privacy to honor their gender identity and to come out to their peers when and how they are ready.

We must send a strong message to Republicans that they cannot legislate hate, one state at a time if we have to.
