SIGN THE PETITION: Ask lawmakers to fund the Natural Resources Trust Fund
Governor Branstad & the Iowa General Assembly

Statewide, there is at least one heavily polluted lake, river or stream in each of Iowa’s 99 counties - over 600 impaired waterways in all. Despite these dangers to our safe drinking water supplies, Governor Branstad and the Iowa Farm Bureau shut down any chance for water quality funding during last year’s legislative session.
Fully funding the Natural Resources Trust Fund means admitting that Iowa has a nitrate problem, which would hurt the Iowa Farm Bureau’s bottom line as a billion dollar insurance business that invests in giant agribusiness corporations. It would also contradict Branstand’s notion that we have an EPA problem, not a nitrate problem.
Sign our petition TODAY to help keep Iowa families safe, our rivers open and our drinking water clean, and to hold lawmakers accountable for funding the Natural Resources Trust Fund.
Also, send Iowa lawmakers the following letter urging them to support full funding of Iowa's Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Dear Governor Branstad & the Iowa General Assembly:
Nitrate levels in Iowa's waterways are at an all-time high. Without a nitrate filtration system in Des Moines, the city's water would be too dangerous to drink; in babies, the levels could be fatal.
Statewide, there is at least one heavily polluted lake, river or stream in each of Iowa’s 99 counties - over 600 impaired waterways in all. Despite these dangers to our safe drinking water supplies, last year, Governor Branstad vetoed $20 million in funds that would have helped to protect and preserve our water quality.
Nitrates in our drinking water sources are a clearly a public health issue and one that cannot be fixed with voluntary measures alone. That's why we are urging you to support legislation this year to fully fund the Natural Resources Trust Fund to help improve Iowa's natural resources and protect the water quality of our rivers, lakes and streams.
Sincerely,
Citizens for a Healthy Iowa,
on behalf of thousands of Iowans
