Sign the petition: Puerto Rico needs federal aid, not more debt

Congress

It has been months since Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, and much of the island is still in shambles. But the Republican Congress is more intent on giving them loans—rather than federal aid.

Puerto Rico was already slammed with Wall Street debt before the hurricane, and this new form of "assistance" will only make a dire situation worse.

As you know, the U.S. government's response has been shockingly inadequate — and markedly different from the response to other hurricanes on the mainland United States, which involved swift federal aid and recovery, without those communities accruing debt in the process.

The U.S. government should not be in the business of disaster capitalism (this term describes how institutions take advantage of major disasters). Big banks often seek to turn misfortune into private fortunes, profiting off the climate disasters they have funded.

Puerto Rico was already buried under a mountain of private debt before the storm struck, and we need to make sure their recovery doesn't come with more debt owed to big banks.

Puerto Rico needs federal aid, not more debt.

Puerto Ricans deserve assistance in rebuilding their communities without loans, and without strings attached. Mainland U.S. communities facing disasters get aid, without fear of mounting debt.

The U.S. government must support the people of Puerto Rico, who are still in dire need months after Hurricane Maria.
