Sign the petition to Congress: Do not gut Americans with Disabilities Act

Congress

Republicans in Congress are going after the civil rights of disabled Americans. With their long history of attempts to violate human rights, it’s not shocking — but what is surprising is that this time, some Democrats are backing it.

HR 620 (ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017) would drastically change the way businesses are required to comply with the ADA. Instead of requiring that businesses proactively comply with the ADA, HR 620 puts the onus of accessibility and accommodation on disabled people.

If it passes, a business would only become compliant with ADA if a disabled person complains that their civil rights were violated. Then, the business is essentially given an endless amount of time to make “substantial progress” towards accessibility.

This bill is heinous — and twelve Democrats are co-sponsoring it. Democratic Representatives Scott Peters, Ami Bera, Jackie Speier, Pete Aguilar, J. Luis Correa, Bill Foster, Kyrsten Sinema, Bobby Rush, Terri Sewell, Henry Cuellar, Jim Costa, and Kathleen Rice all back this bill.

Any support for this bill is completely unacceptable. What’s more, Democrats are supposed to fight FOR civil rights, not destroy vital legislation that undermines them.

Sign now to call on Congress to reject HR 620. This bill must never pass.

I am outraged that anyone would support HR 620. This bill strips disabled Americans of their civil rights and guts the Americans with Disabilities Act. Vote no on the ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017.
