Sign the petition to Governors: Reject Trump's militarization of U.S.-Mexico border

Donald Trump wants to send National Guard troops to militarize the U.S.-Mexico border.

Even though unauthorized border crossings are at their lowest since the Nixon Administration. And the alleged "caravans" he speaks of are mostly Central American women and their kids who are fleeing skyrocketing murder rates, gang violence & political unrest in their countries.

This is politics, pure and simple. Trump is pandering to his right-wing base before the midterm elections—whipping them into further hysteria against immigrants and people of color, as well as trampling on U.S. and international law protecting asylum-seekers.

But Trump can't do it alone. Under Title 32, he must get cooperation from the four border-state governors (California, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas) before deploying National Guard troops.

Not only is it imperative that governors stand up to Trump's bigotry, there is also precedent for doing so. In 2006, Republican governor Arnold Schwarzenegger denied a request from Bush.

We can't move Trump, but we can pressure governors to deny his request. The governor of Oregon has already said she would deny such a request if asked, but we need the governors of all four border states (California, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas) to reject Trump now.

Trump's request to militarize the U.S.-Mexico border is morally abhorrent, and completely unnecessary. As governor, we demand that you deny Trump's Title 32 request to deploy the National Guard.
