Sign the petition to HUD: Stop delaying vital racial justice work

U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

This week, a number of civil rights organizations filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and its leader, HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

In August, Carson delayed the implementation of the Small Area Fair Market Rent Rule, a policy set to roll out on January 1, 2018 that would make it easier for people using Section 8 housing vouchers to afford rent in areas with better educational and economic opportunities.

Thanks to Ben Carson, the Small Area Fair Market Rent Rule won’t be implemented for at least two more years. Delaying this important policy specifically harms Black families seeking better neighborhoods — and the lawsuit filed against HUD addresses the segregative effect this postponement will have.

Black families deserve to live in supportive and resourceful communities, not to be pushed around by HUD and Secretary Carson. It is vital that HUD stops delaying the vital racial justice work their office should be carrying out.

Stop delaying the vital racial justice work your office should be carrying out. Postponing policies like the Small Area Fair Market Rent Rule only harms Black families.
