Forty-four million Americans hold student debt. The student debt crisis is SERIOUS for borrowers across all demographics and age groups.

Every graduating has more college debt than the year before. In fact, student debt has doubled since 2009 and set a new record in 2018 - over $1.5 trillion in student loans! Rising college costs are keeping families from getting ahead, buying a home, or saving for retirement.

Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) are taking action. CPC Co-Chair Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) introduced the Debt-Free College Act of 2019 (H.R. 1571), and Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI) introduced the Senate companion (S. 672).

The Debt-Free College Act would create state-federal partnerships to provide debt-free college, making college without debt a reality for American students.

Higher education needs to be a practical, attainable option for all Americans. We must call on Congress to support this legislation. It is time to guarantee that all Americans have a debt-free college option if they need it.
