Stand With Oakland City Workers for a Just Recovery!

We are calling on Mayor Libby Schaaf and every member of the Oakland City Council to create a budget that puts working people first.
Working families in Oakland are more vulnerable now than ever. This is especially true in neighborhoods hit hardest by COVID, such as East Oakland, West Oakland, and the majority Latino Fruitvale. The inequities created by decades of structural racism and austerity have simply been magnified.
Frontline city workers have been risking their lives to keep essential public services running. We have been working overtime to adapt to this disaster and meet the needs of our community. But just as working families need them most, Mayor Schaaf’s response to this crisis has been to lay off frontline city workers and shut down life-saving services.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Oakland has the wealth to weather the storm and become a just and equitable city. But for too long, the profits of big corporations and developers have come before the future of Oakland. It’s time for the wealthy to pay their fair share so we can invest in jobs and public services that make our economy strong.

Prioritizes investing in vital public services, starting with fully restoring fire department services and rehiring all laid off temporary part-time city workers.
Respects the contributions of Oakland’s city workers and allows us to fully staff our departments through fair wages that reflect the increased cost of living in Oakland.
Uses rainy day reserves and federal relief as intended, to invest in public services and fund frontline city workers.
Additionally, we call on you to commit to creating a more resilient budget in the future by asking big corporations and developers to pay their fair share. Working families in Oakland should not have to bear the cost of this pandemic.
