Stop Greenidge Crypto Mining!
Chris Hogan, DEC, Albany
The Greenidge Generating Station, located in the Town of Dresden, Yates County, is primarily a natural gas-fired power plant, with a generating capacity of approximately 107 megawatts (MW), which will be used for the purpose of mining cryptocurrency.
Recent reporting has found that cryptocurrency mining consumes a tremendous amount of energy in order to operate computers that run 24/7. According to research from the New York Times, globally, cryptomining consumes more electricity than the entire country of Finland, which is almost 0.5% of all electricity consumption worldwide.
In order for Greenidge to continue operating, they need a Title V Air Permit, an application which the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has the power to approve or deny.
New York State simply can’t reach our climate goals set out by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) if the state approves facilities like the Greenidge Generating Station. Please comment to the DEC and let them know that you oppose this project due to its violation of the CLCPA, and that they should not approve their Title V Air Permit Application.

Dear Mr Hogan,
New York State simply can’t reach its climate goals set out by the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) if the state approves facilities like the Greenidge Generating Station. We are already seeing extreme impacts from climate change and the state must work hard to meet CLCPA goals, at a minimum.
I oppose this project due to its violation of the CLCPA. Please deny the Title V Air Permits for the Greenidge Generating Station for its cryptomining operations.
Thank you.
