Don't let Portland Police get deputized by ICE

Maine State Legislature

When federal authorities seize people who have lives, jobs, and families in Maine, it sends a chill through our communities. Law-abiding immigrants are afraid to report crimes, to serve as witnesses in court cases, or even to go about their ordinary business of making a living and caring for their families.

A Portland ordinance passed in 2003 offers some protection by prohibiting police from asking about the immigration status of people they encounter in the course of their duties.

Progressive Portland supports taking that a step further, banning local police and government officials from aiding ICE agents in their raids. That's a conversation that's still taking place among city leaders.

But LD 366, a state bill introduced by racist Republican Larry Lockman, aims to coerce cities like Portland to agree to be deputized as foot soldiers in Trump's deportation force--or else lose millions in state funding.

Sign today to let Larry Lockman and our state legislators know we are a welcoming city, and that our government officials are not here to act out Donald Trump's agenda.
