Conserve Our Public Lands And Oceans! Keep It In The Ground!

Barack Obama, President, United States of America

We're calling on President Obama to stop selling polluting fossil fuels, including oil and gas, from our public lands and waters. These leases fuel climate change, pollute water and rip off the American public, giving our heritage and our future away to the dirtiest corporate giants. Extracting publicly-owned fossil fuels like tar sands and oil shale in the Colorado River drainage and offshore oil drilling in the Atlantic threatens cherished American landscapes, oceans, wildlife and communities, and the livability of the planet we all rely on.

With your help and with a robust and growing movement across the country, we plan to deliver one million signatures to the White House demanding that President Obama keep fossil fuels in the ground. Please add your name now!

Climate change poses unprecedented threats to human civilization. During your term you've given voice to the urgency of those threats and have taken important steps to address greenhouse gas pollution. But these efforts haven't been enough to prevent greenhouse gas emissions from reaching record levels and accelerating climate catastrophe.

You now have the opportunity to lead the effort to curb greenhouse gas emissions by stopping new fossil fuel leasing on federal lands. One of the many benefits of this action would be to stop a burgeoning tar sands and oil shale industry in America. Right now over 800,000 acres of federal public land are available for tar sands and oil shale leases in the Colorado River drainage and these dirty fuels emit three times the greenhouse gases as conventional oil.

Leasing of publicly owned fossil fuels contributes significantly to U.S. and global greenhouse gas emissions. Over the past decade, the burning of fossil fuels from federal leasing has resulted in nearly a quarter of all U.S. energy-related emissions.

Time is running out, and we need bold and meaningful climate action to defend against an unspeakable future. We call on you to commit to keeping all of our remaining, unleased public fossil fuels in the ground. Your leadership is necessary to ensure a livable climate and planet for both present and future generations.
