STOP the Bond Funding of TotalEnergies Harmful Oil & Gas Projects

Jane Fraser, CEO of Citibank; Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorganChase; Brian Moynihan, CEO of Bank of America

Bonds fund 70% of TotalEnergies’ ongoing drilling operations.

Citibank, Bank of America, and JP Morgan Chase, along with other US and foreign banking institutions have funded long term bonds that support Total's harmful drilling operations in Arlington, and worldwide.

In Arlington, Texas, there are 400 gas wells now, and Total has applied for the first new drill zone in a decade. The new drill zone, called Maverick, will be behind the Mother’s Heart Learning Center and near three schools - Johns, Adams, and Thornton Elementary Schools in East Arlington. Once established, Total plans to drill 10 new wells on the site, but once established the company will be allowed to drill more without public notification.

The support Total receives from these three banks jeopardizes the health and human rights of those who live in Arlington, the region, and communities across the globe. By funding Total, these banks also contribute to the climate crisis and detract from investment in clean energy.

Together, let’s demand these banks no longer fund TotalEnergies for the sake of our community and other communities around the globe.

Sign a letter to the 3 CEOs of Citibank, JP Morgan Chase, and Bank of America. Demand that they STOP investing in Total and the funding of fossil fuels.

Please feel free to customize your letter with how you feel living in Arlington amongst Total’s ongoing fracking operations. If you live in Dallas/Ft. Worth (DFW), discuss how tired you are of the poor air quality that our region continues to face in part due to the contributing pollution from Total.

If you are a customer, credit card holder, or stockholder of these banks, let them know.

Once you’ve signed the letter, please share it widely with your friends and family members, and in all your networks. Thank you.

I have recently learned that your three banks are funding long-term bonds for TotalEnergies, a French energy giant that is fracking as close as 300 feet away from homes, schools, and daycares in Arlington, Texas.

These long-term bonds that support Total’s expansion of fossil fuel projects represent billions of dollars that extend for as long as 30 years or more in maturity.
Arlington, Texas, is home to 400 gas wells at approximately 50 sites. Total has around 200 wells at almost 30 of those sites.

Tarrant County, where Arlington is located, is one of the largest urban fracking areas in the country. It is estimated that about 370,000 out of 2.1 million residents in Tarrant county live less than one half mile of a Total drill site. These numbers are growing as Total expands operations here.

More than 30,000 Arlington children go to public school within half a mile of a gas well. The county has one of the highest asthma rates in the country with almost one out of four children with asthma. It also has one of the highest rates of birth defects recorded than those of similar Texas counties since 2014.

Are you aware that it is well documented that fracking also contributes to childhood leukemia, premature births, heart disease, respiratory problems and many other health issues? These health issues are not limited to children, but also the elderly, and those who are immune-compromised.

In addition, emissions from fracking are linked to an increase in ground-level ozone. The Dallas/Fort Worth region, where Tarrant County is located, has not been in compliance with federal ozone standards for decades.

As a person of conscience, I wonder why an American bank would support the poisoning of a US city where so many of your customers, credit card holders, and investors reside? Even France has the common sense to ban fracking in its own country.

Please. I ask you to no longer support the financing of Total’s fossil fuel expansion as it violates the health and human rights of those in my community, in Tarrant County, across Texas, and other communities worldwide.

Can I get your commitment as an American CEO to no longer offer bonds to TotalEnergies? Our health and lives depend on it.
