Stop the Execution of Duane Owen in Florida

Florida Board of Executive Clemency & Governor Ron DeSantis

Duane Owen is scheduled for execution in Florida on June 15, 2023 for the 1984 murder of Georgianna Worden. The following is from our friends at Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty:

Duane was sent to death row at the age of 23. Duane was born to alcoholic parents. His mother died of cancer, and shortly afterward, his father committed suicide when Duane was just 9 years old. He was sent to an orphanage where he was sexually and physically abused. He was forced to have sex with a 35-year-old childcare director, who was supposed to protect him.

Two jurors in both of his trials found this mitigation compelling and voted for Duane to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Florida's return to executions in 2023, after more than three years of not pursuing them, marks the state as an outlier in its use of the death penalty. The majority of other states are on a downward trend of executions. Please sign the petition asking Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida State Board of Executive Clemency to do everything within their power to stop this execution, including issuing a stay, and seeking a path to clemency in the case.

We are writing to ask that you to stop the June 15, 2023 execution of Duane Owen in revenge for his 1984 murder of Georgianna Worden.

We are concerned that while the vast majority of states with capital punishment continue on a downward trend of executions, Florida is going against this trend by resuming executions.

We, the undersigned, ask that you do everything within your power to stop this execution, including issuing a stay, and seeking a path to clemency in the case.
