Stop the harmful, invasive online proctoring

Private online proctoring companies invade student privacy and hurt student mental health. Students have reported urinating in their seats during tests because the proctor wouldn’t let them leave their screens. Dark-skinned students have been unable to take tests because proctoring software can’t “recognize" their face. Female students have expressed a fear of showing strange men around their private spaces, including one young woman whose proctor called her “sweetheart” throughout the exam. These private companies are raking in millions from colleges and universities with no accountability to student privacy or wellbeing.
There are many equitable and respectful solutions for remote testing integrity, including shifting to critical thinking and essay-based testing. Respected universities like CUNY and others are using these methods while banning proctoring corporations from spying on students. The American Association of Colleges and Universities can help keep students safe by recommending schools ban online proctoring.

Parents are deeply concerned about the health and safety risks online proctoring presents for college and university students. Dozens of news reports have been filled with horror stories of invasions of privacy, racial bias, and mental health harms brought on by online proctoring companies.
We understand that diversity and equity are priorities for AACU, and believe you value student health and safety as we do. Therefore, we ask you to recommend that member schools help protect equity and student safety by banning online proctoring and using more equitable and respectful means of ensuring remote testing integrity.
