It is clear now that Labour’s six tests for Tory Brexit will not be met. It looks like there will be no real trade deal before we crash out irreversibly next March, and no alternative can be negotiated in time. The decisive moment for Labour and Britain is this autumn.
We call on Momentum’s National Coordinating Group to hold a vote of all our members this summer to decide whether to oppose Tory Brexit, and whether to campaign for Labour to hold a vote at Annual Conference in September on giving the people the final say on the Brexit deal.
We must defeat the government’s deal in Parliament. We want a general election but the Tories don't want to give us one, so we must force their hand. We are left with only one option. Labour must be prepared to support a people’s vote on the final deal – giving the British people the chance to reconsider Tory Brexit, in light of the mess the government has made of the negotiations and the damage it will do to the communities Labour represents.
We believe such a position would win more votes and seats, helping in future to elect the Corbyn-led government which this country so badly needs. Many Leave voters already think Brexit was a bad decision. Many more support the idea of giving the people the final say.
The biggest threat to Labour’s socialist programme would be for us to take over the reins of government just as Brexit’s worst consequences are hitting. Tory Brexit will trash the economy, scrap workers’ rights and bind us to a future of deregulation and dodgy trade deals. We cannot allow our transformation of Britain to be endangered in this way.
We cannot abandon our comrades across the continent. We must fight alongside them against the disaster of neoliberalism and against the racism and xenophobia of the far-right, which were the driving forces behind the Brexit vote here at home. Offering the possibility of staying in Europe could help a British socialist government secure victories for workers beyond our own shores – taking on the neoliberal aspects of the EU, and building a continent genuinely capable of controlling capital and providing decent rights for all.
Labour members overwhelmingly support Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership and oppose Tory Brexit. Let’s stand up for our principles, stop this disaster, get into government — and transform the UK and Europe together!
