Strong communities, strong transit system

Toronto Transit Commission CEO Rick Leary

Faith plays a huge role in our society and this world. There is no question that when faith groups and unions align, they have made positive social change in this world. From the civil rights movement, to international solidarity, to important legislative changes, when workers know that someone bigger has their back, they have the confidence and support to make change. The fight become a moral movement.

When you and your coworkers bring your faith communities into alliance with your union fight for a better TTC, you and your coworkers have the power to make big changes at work. Your union has a history of aligning with faith organizations for the power to make change. This is because as the guardians of public transit, there is a moral and ethical call to act so that we can have the safest, strongest and most reliable transit system for the public that is also a great place to work.

As leaders of faith, we are writing on behalf of, and in support of, our many members across the city and Greater Toronto Area who are employed at the Toronto Transit Commission and who are members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113. We are also writing on behalf of, and in support of, our constituent who use public transit each day.

It is our privilege to stand in solidarity with them and call on you to act morally and to seriously consider the requests and rectify the grievances that the workers are articulating through their union negotiations. We have heard their desperate appeals. From their perspective, in which we concur, the workers at the TTC are not being shown the value of what they are truly worth in these negotiations. Their requests do not seem unreasonable in regard to maintaining standards of service, frequency, safety and providing compensation that allows workers to afford to live within the city that they work.

Speaking on behalf of my constituents and membership, and in concert with the broader faith community, we earnestly urge you to serious consider the many requests of the transit workers and their negotiation representatives as you sit at the bargaining table.
