Over the past five months our Negotiating Team has been at the table bargaining for fair and equitable working conditions, continued quality research and academic excellence at Carleton University.

The working conditions of CUASA members directly affect the quality of education, research excellence and student experiences at Carleton. Ballooning class sizes, reduced course offerings, fewer teaching assistants and support staff are all already affecting the quality of education and research at Carleton.

Our work is central to the core mission of the university, teaching and research - CUASA is bargaining for a better Carleton.

This petition will be sent to Carleton’s President and Board of Governors Chair and published on CUASA’s website for the length of bargaining when we reach 300+ signatures.

I am writing to express my full support for CUASA’s Negotiating Team in their efforts to negotiate a fair and equitable collective agreement and to call the Employer to engage in good faith negotiations. Carleton’s future achievements are best assured in the protection of the working conditions of the professors and librarians whose teaching and research are central to the success of the institution.

• I believe that reasonable class sizes and teaching assistant ratios are fundamentally important to the quality of education provided to Carleton Students.
• I believe that fair wages that keep up with inflation and are competitive with other Ontario Universities are crucially important for the recruitment and retention of quality researchers and educators.
• I believe that health benefits, including access to mental health services, are essential in creating a healthy and productive work environment.

I strongly urge Carleton to re-evaluate budgeting decisions that diminish research and academic standards, weaken faculty governance, threaten academic freedom and increase precarity in academic labour. The future success of Carleton requires prioritizing commitments to research and academic excellence. This begins in a fair and equitable collective agreement with the workers who provide the labour of research and teaching.

I urge Carleton to fully engage in the processes of conciliation, recognize the importance of CUASA’s demands, and to diligently work towards a fair and equitable collective agreement.
