Flagstaff can become a leader in bike & pedestrian infrastructure. The City has created numerous planning documents that outline quality separated holistic bicycle and pedestrian corridors. Yet much more is needed. Most recently, the City has adopted the Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP), and the Climate Neutrality Plan (CNP), calling for “the Big Shift” and capping emission levels at 2019 levels, becoming a Vision Zero town with zero deaths on our roads, flipping our road design prioritizing pedestrians and bicycling, and the funding of design work for 5 key projects. The City’s Regional Plan states that the City should be building alternatives to private vehicles.

Bicycle transportation is the most affordable form of travel. Moreover, bicycle use reduces congestion, improves health, diminishes harmful emissions, facilitates student & community mobility, stimulates commercial activity, and deals with the City’s declared Climate Change Emergency.

The residents of Flagstaff are ready for the City to take action on these topics and are ready to assist City Leadership, Staff, and the City Council in taking steps forward.

- Better maintained bicycle and pedestrian ways near highly traveled roadways in all seasons.

- Review engineering designs to better align with the CNP, ATMP, Vision Zero guidelines, new priorities, Regional Plan, and more.

- Identify funding locally (prop 419), State and Federal grants, and other sources to fund the 5 identified projects. New staff members to support Martin Ince, the City’s MultiModal Planner, with Transportation Demand Management and more. Funding is also needed to adjust City Code & progress with Vision Zero efforts.

The time for action is now, and we cannot afford to wait.
