Support Insurance Coverage for Fertility Treatment in Delaware!

Delaware General Assembly

Infertility affects 1 in 3 couples, and 3 in 4 of those couples never receive treatment - simply because they can't afford it.

SB 139 would require health insurance offered in Delaware to provide coverage for fertility care services (including in vitro fertilization "IVF") and fertility preservation for individuals diagnosed with cancer and other diseases whose medically necessary treatment could adversely affect their fertility.

Delaware's infertility coverage options are limited. Few employers cover infertility treatment, and those that do cover very little of the cost. Most Delawareans without infertility coverage fall into a "coverage gap" that keeps them from receiving financial help to receive treatment. At a cost of as much as $25,000 for one round of IVF treatment, many couples dealing with infertility aren't left with any options.

Currently, 15 states have laws regarding insurance coverage for infertility diagnosis or treatment, including New Jersey and Maryland. This puts the First State at a significant economic disadvantage, as many reproductive-age residents take employment outside of Delaware for better fertility care benefits.

Like all other diseases, infertility should be covered by insurance, because every person deserves the chance to start a family when they choose to.

We need your support on SB 139.

Infertility affects 1 in 3 couples, and 3 in 4 of those couples never receive treatment - simply because they can't afford it.

Delaware's infertility coverage is unacceptable. At a cost of as much as $25,000 for one round of IVF treatment, many couples dealing with infertility aren't left with any options, so their choice to start a family is taken away from them.

SB 139 isn't just important to Delaware's families; it's important to Delaware's economy, too. Because neighboring states offer comprehensive infertility coverage, Delawareans are leaving their jobs in the First State and moving to places like New Jersey and Maryland to receive a better insurance package. We're losing skilled members of the workforce, as well as the family that they will inevitably build.

It is important to stand behind SB 139 because every person deserves the chance to start a family when they choose to, and this bill is a vital first step toward that goal. Thank you for your support.
