Support Product of USA Labeling for Meat

United States Department of Agriculture

National Farmers Union (NFU) supports the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) proposed rule on “Voluntary Labeling of Regulated Products with United States Origin Claims.” For far too long, importers of meat products  have misused “Product of USA” and “Made in the USA” labels on their packaging. This rule will provide consumers with more accurate and meaningful labeling.

Sign this petition and then submit your own comments to the Federal Register to show USDA that you support truthful labeling!

Consumers want truthful and straightforward labels about the origins of the food they purchase, and farmers and ranchers want to provide consumers with that information. The relationship between farmers and the consuming public should be one of trust, thus any food labels must be held to the highest level of integrity.

Farmers Union members believe that consumers must be empowered to make informed decisions about the food they purchase. Thorough and accurate food labels – even if voluntary – can help make this possible.

As Congress considers whether or not to reinstate mandatory COOL, this rulemaking process is an important step forward. Clear standards must be set and rigorously enforced to ensure that voluntary “Made in USA,” “Product of USA,” or similarly voluntary beef labelling claims are accurate.  Misleading, dishonest, or uncorroborated claims on beef labeling hurts the ranchers, the beef industry, and the public.
