The residents of 1320 Nicholson St NW have lived in terrible conditions for years: the building’s roof Leaks, ceilings are caving in, there’s mold in the walls, and many of the apartments are infested with bedbugs. The landlord has promised to make repairs but never followed through.
Now tenants are ready to fight back. They’ve informed the landlord and the management company that unless repairs are made by October 1, they’re going to launch a rent strike.
Tenants understand that the landlord’s neglect isn’t an accident; it’s a strategy to make money. Like many slumlords, the owner is trying to use the bad conditions to push residents out of their rent-controlled apartments so he can bring in new tenants who will pay much higher rents. Tenants have seen the same thing happen throughout the neighborhood and the city, and affordable apartment buildings are emptied and flipped into luxury condos. But they won’t allow themselves to be pushed out of Brightwood, a neighborhood that’s been their home for decades.

Los Inquilinos de la 1320 Nicholson St NW han vivido en condiciones inhabitables por varios años: hay goteras en el techo, los techos se están derrumbando, tiene moho en las paredes, y varios de los apartamentos están infestados con chinches. El dueño ha prometido arreglos pero no ha cumplido!

We are writing to you as concerned members of the community who do not want to see our neighbors at 1320 Nicholson endure unjust housing conditions any longer!
The residents of 1320 Nicholson St NW have lived in terrible conditions for years: the building’s roof leaks, the ceilings are caving in, the walls are bubbling, there are electrical and heating problems and many of the apartments are infested with bedbugs and other pests. Tenants have communicated their concerns to maintenance many times over the past couple of months with no clear action plan to repair major issues. We demand that you abide by landlords' responsibility to a warranty of habitability and make repairs that would bring the building up to the housing code.
There are many forces driving low-income communities of color out of this neighborhood and we do not support business practices that contribute to the displacement of our neighbors. We stand in solidarity with the tenants on rent strike. We demand that you follow through on your responsibilities as a landlord and make repairs that would bring the building up to the housing code.
