My name is Zahra.
I have worked as a cook at Tufts University for 12 years. Last April, we won our union and joined Boston's UNITE HERE Local 26. We decided to join the union because we wanted respect and the ability to negotiate with Tufts University as equals.

Now, we are fighting to have the same affordable healthcare and wage standard as dining hall workers at Harvard, Northeastern, Simmons and other Boston universities where food service workers have joined Local 26 over the past decade.
Recently, I had to cancel my Tufts’ health insurance because it was so expensive. I paid over $600 a month in health care expenses. As a new mother, I want to be able to take care of my growing family.
In contract negotiations, a time where we should be making improvements and solving problems together, Tufts University is proposing NO improvements to our health care. I can’t take care of my family if my health care remains unaffordable.
We are asking the Tufts community, and the greater Boston community, to support us by letting Tufts University President Anthony Monaco know that this cannot stand. Tufts needs to provide the same standard for dining hall workers as every other major university in the Boston area.
Please join us in telling Tufts to support the people who take care of their students every day.
Thank you for your support,
Zahra Warsame

Dear Mr. Monaco,
As a supporter of Tufts University dining hall workers, I am asking you to listen to the concerns of your employees. Tufts needs to provide the same standard for dining hall workers like every other major university in the Boston area.
Recently, Zahra Warsame, a dining hall worker on Tufts’ campus for 12 years, had to cancel her Tufts’ health insurance because it was so expensive. She paid over $600 a month in health care expenses. As a new mother, she deserves to be able to take care of her growing family.
Contract negotiations are a time for making improvements and solving problems together. However, Tufts University is proposing NO improvements to health care. This is unacceptable.
I am asking you to agree to dining hall workers’ demands. Support the people who take care of your students every day.
Thank you.
