April 13th marked three years since unknown gunmen attacked 16-year-old environmental activist and youth organizer Topacio Reynoso Pacheco. She died from her wounds the next day. Alex Reynoso, Topacio’s father, was also seriously injured in the same attack and survived a second assassination attempt in October 2015. Both father and daughter were activists in their home community in southeastern Guatemala, through the Organized Civil Society of Mataquescuintla - a civil society organization that works to protect the Earth and resist Tahoe Resources' Escobal mine located in neighboring San Rafael las Flores. Three years after the attack, Topacio’s family is still waiting for justice.

In fact, there are concerns that local investigation agencies may have actively stalled investigations, preventing the case from advancing. Allowing these crimes to remain in impunity condones violence being used against environmental defenders, and encourages the repetition and escalation of attacks. Sign the petition asking the Guatemalan Public Prosecutor’s office to expedite a full and impartial investigation into the attacks against Alex and his daughter, and provide the resources necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice.  These crimes must be fully investigated and their material and intellectual authors be held accountable.

The Reynoso Pacheco family deserves justice for the crimes committed against them. Call on the Public Prosecutor's office to initiate a full investigation!

Actúa ahora para exigir justicia por los ataques contra defensores del medio ambiente en Guatemala.

El 13 de abril marcó tres años desde que personas armadas atacaron a Topacio Reynoso Pacheco, de 16 años, una activista de medio ambiente guatemalteca y una organizadora de la juventud. Murió de sus heridas al día siguiente. Alex Reynoso, padre de Topacio, también resultó gravemente herido en el mismo ataque y sobrevivió a un segundo intento de asesinato en octubre de 2015. Tanto el padre como la hija eran activistas en su comunidad en el sureste de Guatemala a través de la Sociedad Civil Organizada de Mataquescuintla - una organización de la sociedad civil que trabaja en defensa de la tierra y en resistencia a la mina Escobal de Tahoe Resources ubicada en el municipio vecino de San Rafael las Flores. Tres años después del ataque, la familia de Topacio sigue esperando la justicia.

De hecho, existe la preocupación de que las instituciones locales de investigación puedan haber participado en detener a las investigaciones, evitando que el caso avance. Al permitir que esos crímenes queden impunes perdona la violencia utilizada en contra de las y los defensores del medio ambiente y alienta la repetición y el aumento de los ataques. Firma la petición pidiendo al Ministerio Público de Guatemala que acelere una investigación completa e imparcial de los ataques contra Alex y su hija y que proporcione los recursos necesarios para llevar los autores a la justicia. Estos crímenes deben investigarse plenamente y responsabilizar a sus autores materiales e intelectuales.

La familia Reynoso Pacheco merece justicia por los crímenes cometidos contra ellos. ¡Exige a la Fiscalía que inicia una investigación completa!
