Take Action: Protect Air Quality During A Respiratory Pandemic

Broomfield City Council

We are living in the midst of a global pandemic present in our state and our communities. This pandemic, COVID-19, results in respiratory illness, as well as respiratory distress, including death, at alarmingly high rates. As a result, we ask that all extraction activities known to release harmful VOCs and air pollution, be ceased, without exception, including those operations at extraction oil and gas facilities throughout Broomfield.

We the residents of Broomfield declare that:

We are living in the midst of a global pandemic present in our state and our communities. This pandemic, COVID-19, results in respiratory illness, as well as respiratory distress, including death, at alarmingly high rates.

We, as citizens, must be afforded all available protections by our government; and we thereby submit that our elected officials:

  • Shall immediately and without hesitation or reservation, with emergency status employed, do all in their power, including the use of their protective police powers and the use of all available Broomfield legal remedies, including those that stipulate the prioritization of health and safety, to require that all extraction activities known to release harmful VOCs and air pollution, be ceased, without exception, including those operations at extraction oil and gas facilities throughout Broomfield.
  • We submit that the cessation of all active operations shall be made in 30-day intervals, in effect serving as 30-day moratoriums, and that these 30-day moratoriums shall be continuously re-enacted and extended until such time the COVID-19 pandemic is shown to have been contained in the city and county of Broomfield.

As the governor of our great state said during this crisis:

"These are historic times and they call for historic measures."

We call on you to act.
    Signed
